I got a lot of mileage out of both the Deliverer and a plasma pistol with my gunslinger build. I also had a good legendary western revolver, which has better damage than a regular.44. There's nothing really wrong with gunslinger, though I think it's probably a tad weaker than rifleman due to the better selection of endgame rifles.What I hate the most is when enemies keep scaling but weapons/abilities don't. Fallout 4 definitely has this problem. Most people won't see it become too bad, but even in a non-grindy playthrough I do notice it. This is where the differences between weapon categories and legendary effects really begin to show.Here's an example of why the scaling system is a bit silly.
Fallout 4 45 Pistol Rifle
I entered a super mutant-infested dungeon with my rifleman character (maybe I was around level 100 at the time). There were lots of super mutant warlords (these enemies scale), and each took some serious firepower to kill (multiple shots with a two-shot gauss rifle). Then I found the boss, a super mutant behemoth. There was a terminal with a warning about letting him out.
Obviously this was meant to be the dungeon's boss, but no, he hadn't scaled like the warlords and was a complete pushover.The example above is just one of many - it shows how the scaling system really doesn't work well when your level gets too high, and I'm not talking about getting anywhere close to level 250. Just playing through the game and the DLCs will do it.Don't even get me started on ♥♥♥♥♥♥ perks that don't scale with your level (like Cannibal) and become entirely useless. Tryed out a pistol build with vats and its useless. Again, it depends on the legendary factor of your weapon. Because pistols shoot a lot of fast low ap shots, you can get 2x or more the amount of shots you can with a rifle. So if you have a pistol with cyro, or wounding, thats each bullet adding in extra damage.
A slower weapon sill does the same basic legendary damage so the pistol stacking damage will add up more.And its the opposite with slow powerful weapons. A rocket launcher with cyro is basically just a rocket launcher, the 10 extra damage means nothing, where as an instigating rocket launcher is vastly powerful compared to an instigating pistol.Each weapon has their uses. Pistols fire fast, build up criticals fast, lots of rounds. A good legendary weapon that is fitted to that fast fire rate makes them great.

I would pit my 10mm automatic wounding 10mm against any weapon in the game (except the double shot fatman), or maybe a neverending double barrel. A kneecapper automatic pistol will incapacitate anything in the game no matter how tough it is.Each weapon has their uses, and with the right perks a silenced legendary automatic pistol will outdamage most weapons, period, except for a few. Yes, and again, you don't have every perk and an instigating gauss sniper rifle at level 40, your spouting such and such 'at level 250 with every perk bla bla bla'At level 250 with every perk you can beat any foe in the game with a knife. Heck at level 90 on very hard WITHOUT any offensive perks i can beat anything i run into with a 10mm.So this discussion is stupid. Let Doom run around at level 250 with his gauss rifle 1 sneak attacking everything, ohh that sounds like fun. Me, i get bored when i can wipe out legendary super mutant overlords or what ever with a strong legenedary weapon. I like to try out different stuff to give a bit of challenge. Not everyone wants to sit on a hill somewhere in the shadows and just 1 shot snipe everything while they watch their favorite tv show in the background, some people like to have fun in the game.So you use your gauss rifle and play, i'll make the game more challengeing for me and not pick up any stealth or weapon perks, and kill the same stuff with my.38 automatic rifle.
